Comment on Editorial: Anarchists, Vigilantes and Gangs! Oh My! by salmonheads http://www.olympiapowerandlight.com/2011/07/editorial-anarchists-vigilantes-and-gangs-oh-my/comment-page-1/#comment-64 salmonheads Wed, 24 Aug 2011 02:44:07 +0000 http://www.olympiapowerandlight.com/?p=1916#comment-64 I wonder if there will be a postscript to this posting from a month ago. The other day, several of the anarchists involved in the Overman incident decided to take to the streets to throw trash around and break stuff. They then gang attacked two private citizens who attempted to clean up the mess that was being left. It is near impossible to defend this type of behavior as anything less than gang like, albeit this may be about the weakest gang in the Western United States. Can we maybe admit that the police chief may be correct in his assessment of this behavior as gang violence, despite how much seem to hate that phrase? I believe it was started before WWII, but it was never completed. It sat there for years. The brewery bought the property and used the building for storage. I believe it was torn down in late sixties. Any information on the old Tumwater hospital that used to sit on the embankment on Capital Blvd. just past the brewery? Comment on Editorial: Busting the Myth About Vacant Storefronts by emalouwho http://www.olympiapowerandlight.com/2009/12/editorial-busting-the-myth-about-vacant-storefronts/comment-page-1/#comment-54 emalouwho Sat, 14 May 2011 16:45:33 +0000 http://www.olympiapowerandlight.com/?p=572#comment-54 As a downtown resident I only know how it feels downtown. I think it's not so much empty storefronts, as whole empty buildings and storefronts that are continually changing. There's the 5th ave "isthmus" monster, the burnt out building on 4th, the reef (again), and I guess that's it. But then there are the rotating storefronts. There are some spaces that just seem to change retailers every year or more. Every time a business goes in, it seems like a ticking clock counting down to it's eventual failure. Even if I patronize the business, I know that's not enough. And some of the stores that do stay, I really wonder how. There are some stores that I know people come downtown just to patronize, like Wind Up Here, and Orca books, and various other restaurants. But then there are others that seem to be empty at all times and their grumpy store clerks. I am one of them. I work at a downtown business part-time and I'm definitely not a good sales person, but I'm not the owner. In some instances, only the loyal (or thick-skinned) dare to enter. I love it downtown, I never want to move, but I can see why people have these misconceptions. For one thing, they never come downtown. As a downtown resident I only know how it feels downtown. Comment on More Absurdity from the Olympian by Mkretzler http://www.olympiapowerandlight.com/2011/02/more-absurdity-from-the-olympian/comment-page-1/#comment-43 Mkretzler Mon, 28 Feb 2011 00:32:45 +0000 http://www.olympiapowerandlight.com/?p=1729#comment-43 I agree that the headline reads as if it was written in Tacoma (though it probably wasn't), but I agree with the paper, the headline, and the attitude on this one. Whether it's part of a trend, a style, or evidence of pique is a little beyond my actual knowledge, but the council's decision to stiff the train depot was stupid, a real false economy.
