You step underground, just below the corner of Capitol Way and Legion Way, and look up to a surreal view of pedestrian shoes. You enter the cavernous room to the smell of cheesy, yeasty goodness wafting from the kitchen.

You feel like a superstar – oh wait, that’s just all of the stars on the walls in shades of red, white and black, with a black and white checkered floor.

Underground Pizza is a small area, with about 5 tables, games to suit your competitive side.

We had three adults and two toddlers on hand who all appreciated the meal. There were crayons and paper on hand, though no high chairs or boosters.

They have 9 varieties of pizza, including a dessert pizza. The varieties include traditional (pepperoni and veggie) and inspired (ham slam, barbecue lover, mushroom madness, chicken alfredo and chicken, bacon and ranch). We got the latter. It was good, though a bit well done.

Pizza only comes in one size: 14 inch and ranges in price from $15 to $17. You can also get a slice for $4, or the special, a slice, salad and soda, for $8. A slice of dessert pizza is $4.50.

Hours are a bit limited – no lunch hours and only Wednesday through Saturday, 5 PM to 10 PM.

The location is close enough to Sylvester Park to enjoy a slice or two before the Music in the Park festivities start up on Wednesdays at dusk.

Side salads are $4 to $5, full salads are $8 to $9. They have Caesar, chop salad, garden fresh and Greek. They were out of homemade Caesar dressing, so our friend got the Greek salad instead, and we had a few bites of it: good and freshly prepared.

They serve Olympic Mountain Ice Cream (it’s so good), 5 varieties of beer for $3.50 a bottle, and wine at $6 a glass.

Underground Pizza is a fine option for your pizza fix in downtown Olympia. ◙
